A year at our school

“As a parent of three children who have all thrived at Como West Public School, I can confidently say this school has exceeded our expectations. Each of my children, with their unique strengths and challenges, has benefited from the school’s genuine commitment to nurturing every child as an individual. The school’s inclusive and welcoming community ensures every family feels valued, creating a strong sense of belonging. With an engaging curriculum, emphasis on well-being, and a wide range of programs—including sport, dance, and choir—Como West fosters confidence, creativity, and a love of learning. The school also recognises gifted and talented students, providing opportunities to extend their abilities. Inclusive Education Support Unit

This term on Wednesday afternoons, students in Classes K6H, K6T and K6V  have embarked on a journey through space as part of our “Spark Curiosity: Sun, Moon and Stars” science unit. Here’s how we have engaged with astronomy in playful, imaginative—and hands‑on—ways:

We used a torch and a globe to model how Australia moved in and out of sunlight as Earth spun on its axis.

We created models of our spinning world.

With those models, we re‑enacted Earth’s movement around the Sun. This role‑play clarified the difference between rotation (Earth spinning) and revolution (Earth travelling around the Sun).

We imagined ourselves in spaceships flying toward the Sun. As we drew nearer, we looked through our imaginary window and observed images of the Sun from increasingly close range. The closer we got, the hotter the Sun felt.

We watched sunlight melt coloured ice cubes— demonstrating the Sun’s role as both a source of light and heat.

With each activity we try to connect abstract astronomical concepts—such as Earth’s spin and the cycle of day and night—to tangible, visible experiences.

Next, we plan to explore the Moon and the stars, including the Dark Emu constellation, as we continue on our journey to spark curiosity.
